About the Historic Maps of Indiana Database
Records for the Historic Maps of Indiana database were created by staff in the Geography and Map Library and
staff hired under the Indiana Heritiage Research Grant, from the Indiana Humanities Council
and the Indiana Historical Society. Maps were selected if they contained geographic coverage
of all or any part of the state of Indiana, including county, city, regional maps.
Sources included but not limited to:
- Geography and Map Library Map Collection (uncataloged). Emphasis was given to maps dating
before 1950. Emphasis was given to flat sheet maps; maps that have been published in reports and other
publications will be added as time permits.
- The database does include maps of Indiana which were published as part of the U.S. Congressinal Serial Set.

- Maps which have been cataloged and identified through the Indiana University's Libraries' online catalog,
IUCAT, have also been included.
Digital images of some maps:
- Maps that we have digitized were selected to provide a representative sampling of the
kinds of maps available.
- Ultimately three formats will be available: thumbnail (gif), j-peg, and PDF.
- Maps were digitized at 600 d.p.i. and saved as tiffs, converted to j-pegs at 72 d.p.i.
by Indiana University's Micrographics. The project was overseen by Matt Dye and Lou Malcomb.
