Varies greatly.  May report facts, studies, statistics, analysis, etc.

Magazine and Journal Articles

Library databases or print periodical indexes

Good sources for very current information or for primary source material.   May provide scholarly perspectives, studies, reports, and analysis. May also provide popular perspectives, polls and stories, etc.

Newspaper Articles

Library databases or print indexes

Good sources of recent or current events information. May range from local to international information and perspectives. May include statistics, polls, reports, opinions, etc.

Videos, documentaries, etc.

IUCAT

Varies greatly.  May be current or historical, depending on the subject matter and format. 

Government Publications

IUCAT or government web sites

Good source for current or older government studies, reports, statistics, etc.

Interviews

Personal interactions, library databases or print indexes, books.

Good sources of topic-specific information and first hand accounts.

Tips

  • If you define and focus your topic as much as possible before you begin researching, it will be easier to select the information sources most appropriate to your assignment.

  • In many cases, you will use more than one type of information source for your assignment.
