At the September 14, 1990 meeting of the IO Cataloging Congress,
representatives of the various IO cataloging agencies approved a
system-wide standard for the subfielding of both Library of
Congress and Superintendent of Documents (SuDoc) classification
numbers in IO copy holdings statements.

The attached document serves only as a guide to this standard. Not
all unusual or exceptional cases of classification numbers have
been reported.

|b Class Number

Subfield |b contains the class number (that part of the number
which pertains to the subject of the work as assigned from the LC
classification schedules). A space is never input between the
class letter and number.

|c Book/Item Number

Subfield |c contains that part of the number pertaining to the
individual piece. Dates or words that follow the item number (i.e.
extensions) are placed in an additional subfield |c for each unit.

HINTS ON CALL NUMBERS IN COPY HOLDINGS STATEMENTS

There are several ways that typos in call numbers will prevent
the number from indexing in the call number index. It is important
for accurate shelflisting in IO that call numbers are input
correctly.

1. Do not put an end-of-field mark (i.e. [ctrl,F4]) at the end
     of a call number.

2. Capitalize the class or subclass letters in a Library of
     Congress number.

3. Be sure that subfield marks are input correctly.
Use | (shift, backslash keys), not }, ], or \

4. Do not include extraneous characters or punctuation.
          Incorrect: Correct:
           |b .F2986 |c .H75 |b F2986 |c .H75

           |b PS3515.\M53 |c Z58 |b PS3515.M53 |c Z58

5. Be sure the punctuation is located in the proper subfield.
          Incorrect: Correct:
            |b DK274. |c H25 |b DK274 |c .H25

6. Do not use brackets in call numbers.
          Incorrect:
            |b PL788.4.G4 |c A333 |c [v. 2]

          Correct:
            |b PL788.4.G4 |c A333 |c v. 2

7. Be sure that the classification number is complete.
           Incorrect: Correct:

8. Do not use the lower case letter "L" to represent the number
     "1"

9. REFORMAT the copy holdings record after inputting a call
     number and REVIEW the number.

HINTS ON CALL NUMBERS IN UNLINKED ITEM RECORDS

Since the call number is one of the few ways we can find unlinked
item records, it is very important that they are input correctly.
Using the following guidelines will help assure the quality of the
information in IO.

1. Be sure that the "CLASS TYPE:" is set correctly:

L = Library of Congress call number (begins with letters
              and numbers)

                    GR487 .G797

D = Dewey call number (begins with numbers)

                    363.7392 KOR

S = Superintendent of Documents (used with government
              documents)

                    C 3.2/2:F 35/986

O = Other (can be anything)

                    No call number 88B-721
                    FIC CRU E LIP

2. CAPITALIZE the initial letter(s) of all call numbers beginning
with letters. For Library of Congress and Superintendent of
     Documents numbers, capitalize all letters.

          No call number

          HD8066 .S56

3. Do not use the lower case letter "L" to represent the number
     "1"

4. Do not include location information as part of the call number
even though it may be printed above the call number. The
following are examples of locations and should not be
     included:

          O.J. Picture UGBC
          O.K. Geolmfiche SLIS
          O.C. Manipulative HPER Microfiche
          Video Slide

5. Do not put the barcode in the call number field.

6. Input the call number at the beginning of the call number
field. If there are spaces or extra punctuation at the
beginning, the call number will not appear in the call number
     index.
