Series: Local Treatment

LOCAL SERIES TREATMENT [minutes, 12/12/89].

Local series treatment decisions will be recorded on series
authority records in the IO authority file. The pattern specified
for local treatment information in NOTIS user documentation will
be followed, except that IO processing unit codes, rather than NUC
symbols, will be used to specify which libraries follow a given
treatment.
Each cataloging agency is encouraged to record local treatment,
even if that treatment is the same as LC's. Several processing
units may record their local treatment in the same local
information field, but each cataloging agency is encouraged to
create a separate field for the processing units for which it is
responsible.
IT IS CRUCIAL THAT NO CATALOGING AGENCY DESTROY LOCAL TREATMENT
INFORMATION WHILE OVERLAYING A SERIES AUTHORITY RECORD. If a
cataloging agency wishes to record updated series authority
information from LC in an IO authority record, the cataloging
agency must EITHER add the updated LC information by manual edit,
OR the cataloging agency must copy all the local treatment
information, overlay the series record, fix the heading use codes,
if necessary, and recopy the local treatment information into the
updated IO authority record.
NOTE: The format for 670 field source citation will not be
prescribed in IO.
