About the collection

The personal library of poet, editor, and scholar John Frederick Nims includes almost 3000 books, mostly single volumes of poetry, but also scholarly editions of Greek and Latin classics in English, Greek or Latin. The works are primarily from the twentieth century. Important authors represented include James Merrill, John Berryman, Ezra Pound, Amy Clampitt, Wallace Stevens, Robert Duncan, Countee Cullen, Robert Lowell, and Frank O'Hara. Many presentation copies are present, including works by Karl Shapiro, John Ciardi, John Ashbery, e.e. cummings and others. A large number of the books are Nim's working copies, many with his annotations. Some of the books from Nim's library including his own works have been individually cataloged, and are included in the Indiana University Library's on-line catalog (IUCAT).

This collection is housed at the Auxiliary Library Facility (ALF). To request these materials for use, note the appropriate box number and follow the "Request ALF Item" link in IUCAT (direct link to 'John Frederick Nims collection' record). For further information, see IUCAT search tips.
