American patriotic songs : Yankee Doodle to The conquered banner, with an emphasis on The star-spangled banner
This catalogue describes an exhibition of American patriotic songs, drawn largely from the collections of Josiah K. Lilly, J. K. Lilly Jr., and Dr. Saul Starr. At least five of the items featured are unique, including the first Southern printing of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” the first printing of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” and an unrecorded broadside version of “Hail Columbia.” Several more are known to exist in five or fewer copies, including “The New Yankee Doodle,” while the collection of printings of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” during the first twenty-five years since its composition, is equaled only by the collection at the Library of Congress. The catalogue includes over thirty pages of illustrations from the exhibition.
