Notable acquisitions from that period include the letters of poets Ezra Pound, Sylvia Plath, and William Carlos Williams; a comprehensive collection of first editions of modern British and American literature; first editions of Milton, Bunyan, and Castiglione; the letters of Vita Sackville-West; archives of S. Fischer-Verlag; papers of South African Nobel Prize winner Nadine Gordimer; the first printed draft of the U.S. Constitution; Manuscripts of Washington, Jay, and Jefferson; the original plan for the Mason-Dixon line; an enormous collection of historical Scottish books and manuscripts; the Coverdale Bible, the first printed in English; many unusual children’s books and the original illustrations for them; representative original drawings for comic books and the original and newspaper serials; fine-bound books and special livres d’artistes; a major collection (formed by Dr. John Talbot Gernon) of cookbooks; the papers of Orson Welles, John Ford, and Peter Bogdanovich; works in the sciences dating back to the 1600s; and a wide variety of political correspondence of several periods and countries.
