This catalogue, and the exhibit it describes, explore the ways in which Europeans have studied, described and changed the American Indian since Columbus’s arrival in the New World. The exhibition is arranged in five subject areas: Indian languages, descriptions of the Indians, theories of the origins of the Indians, the Las Casas controversy, and the Catholic Church and the Indians. In addition, it describes a group of Inca portraits.
