Une affaire de goût : a selection of cookbooks, 1475-1873, from the library of Dr. and Mrs. John Talbot Gernon
An exhibition catalog featuring 150 books, selected by Dr. John T. Gernon, from his collection of more than 1500 cookbooks now held at the Lilly Library. Included are cookbooks dating back to the fifteenth-century and published throughout Europe. Due to the very practical nature of the cookbook, many of these books are rare; the Gernon’s collection is notable for the consistently fine condition of its books coupled with the high percentage of first editions. Included in the exhibition are a range of sixteenth, seventeenth, and eighteenth century books in their original bindings, a copy of Brillat-Savarin in the original boards, Soyer and Dumas in publisher’s cloth, and books from the libraries of Louis XVI and the Czar of Russia.
