Welcometo the website for Ian Fleming and James Bond materials at the Lilly Library.
The Lilly Library is the rare books and special collections library of Indiana University, Bloomington. We have an extensive collection of Fleming's print materials and manuscripts available for use in the Lilly's reading room, as well as items related specifically to the Bond films.
This site will enable you to explore the James Bond novels and Fleming's manuscripts for them, Ian Fleming's activities as a book collector, and links to other James Bond-related websites. You will also find search tips to research Fleming materials at the Lilly and have access to IU's online library catalog, IUCAT, for both the Lilly's holdings and those of the university system at large.
Conference and exhibition
The website accompanies a conference hosted by IU's Department of English, The Cultural Politics of Ian Fleming and 007, May 29-June 1, 2003. The conference, the first ever academic Fleming symposium, marks the 50th anniversary of the publication of Casino Royale. It resulted in a series of essays published by the IU Press entitled Ian Fleming & James Bond: The Cultural Politics Of 007.
The Lilly Library will be exhibiting Spies and Secret Agents: James Bond and Beyond in the Main Gallery and Lincoln Room from May 27-September 13, 2003. Featured items include all the Bond novels authored by Fleming and those that followed by other authors; posters and presskits from many of the Bond films; items that portray Fleming's career as a writer and a book collector; and examples of other spy fiction, both contemporary to the Bond novels and inspired by them.
