FORSTER MSS. II
The Forster mss. II, 1947-1970, consist of letters from Edward Morgan Forster, 1879-1970, novelist, to his biographer and one-time secretary Philip Nicholas Furbank, 1920- , author. For the most part the letters involve arrangements for mutual visits, dinners, theatre outings, a holiday in Portugal, etc. There is also much material of biographical interest including many references to Forster's public and domestic life, his friends in Cambridge and elsewhere, lecture tours, and holidays. Of particular interest in the file are many letters, undated and from 1956 onward, concerning the typing of Maurice, its readership in manuscript form, and various revisions and re-workings of unpublished stories of a similar theme.
Also present is a letter to Forster from Edward Ford, 19 October 1953, thanking the author, on behalf of the Queen, for a copy of his latest book, but refusing Forster's request for an autography photograph of Her Majesty.
