HARINGER MSS.
The Haringer mss., 1930–1963, consist of poems in manuscript bound for friends by the German poet Jakob Haringer (1898–1948), along with other related material. Haringer was born in Dresden as Johann Franz Albert, and attended school in Munich and Salzburg. A soldier in WWI, he served in Flanders, and was discharged due to heart problems in 1918. From 1920 on he led the life of a vagabond, was accused of various petty crimes, and on several occasions was committed to mental institutions. Most of his works were self–published, with the place of publication often fictional. In 1936 Nazis revoked his citizenship and he fled to Switzerland. From 1939 on he lived for a time in Paris, then, illegally, in Switzerland, where he was interned in various refugee camps during WWII. He died during a visit to Zurich in 1948.
