MEIER MSS.

The Meier mss., 1927–2009, consist of the papers of Deborah W. Meier, the founder of the modern small schools movement. Meier began teaching in Chicago during the 1960s, and in 1974 she founded her first school, Central Park East, in New York City. In 1987, Meier received a MacArthur Foundation grant recognizing her work in public education. She published her first book, The Power of Their Ideas, in 1995. She has remained active in education reform through 2009.

The papers include materials related to the planning and operation of IS44, PS144, PS84, Central Park East, Central Park East Secondary School, Mission Hill School, and the Coalition Campus Schools Project. These materials include school planning documents, correspondence related to school organization and operation, school policies, school newsletters, student publications, and assessments of students. The papers also include Meier's personal, political, and professional correspondence; articles by Meier; drafts of chapters from several of Meier's books; speeches given by Meier; articles by others on Meier and her projects; honors and awards Meier received; and DVD, VHS, CD, and cassette tape recordings.
