The Sipper mss., 1973-1996, consist of letters to bookseller Ralph Bruno Sipper, 1932- , of Santa Barbara, California. The letters are primarily from literary and academic figures with whom Sipper has done business and formed friendships over the years. Among the correspondents are Eric Ambler, Robert Albert Bloch, Christopher Buckley, Jerome Cheryn, Robert Coover, Edgar Lawrence Doctorow, Robert Olney Easton, William Oliver Everson, William Gaddis, Tess Gallagher, Allen Ginsberg, Herbert Gold, John Clendennin Burne Hawkes, Edward Hoagland, Laura (Riding) Jackson, Robert Kelly, James Laughlin, Norman Mailer, David Markson, James Merrill, Wright Morris, Dmitri Nabokov, Joyce Carol Oates, Tim O'Brien, Robert Brown Parker, Julian Symons, Alexander Louis Theroux, John Hoyer Updike, Diane Wakoski, Eudora Welty, and Calder Baynard Willingham.
Among his other activities Sipper often writes book reviews for Santa Barbara and Los Angeles newspapers and periodicals. A group of clippings of such reviews and articles, 1974-1996, complete the collection.
