ALBEE MSS.

The Albee mss., 1961, consist of two mimeographed stage scripts for one act plays by American dramatist Edward Albee, 1928- . The plays are The American dream and The Death of Bessie Smith. Each is accompanied by a Stage Play License, signed by the Lord Chamberlain, 20 October 1961, permitting performance by the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, Sloane Square, S.W.1 [London].

The American dream is in a buff colored folder labeled with title and author and a signed certification that the play is "a true copy ... as licensed." Typed on the author/title label are words, in red, CORRECT VERSION. Each page of the script is stamped: Certified copy of stage play licensed by the Lord Chamberlain, St. James' Palace. Pages 5, 10, and 24 have additional stamps, in purple: Deleted by the Lord Chamberlain.

The Death of Bessie Smith is in a blue folder labeled with title and author and a signed certification that this is a "true copy of the play ... as licensed." Each page of the script is stamped: Certified copy of stage play licensed by the Lord Chamberlain, St. James' Palace. Pages 4, 6A, 8, 10, 13, 14, and 17 have additional stamps, in purple: Deleted by the Lord Chamberlain.

The accompanying licenses are printed forms filled-in and carry the signature Scarbrough as Lord Chamberlain.
