Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

ANDRZEJEWSKI MSS.

The Andrzejewski mss., ca. 1950-1989, consist of writings, notes, etc. relating to the languages, literatures and cultures of the peoples of the Horn of Africa. The materials were collected and compiled by Somali linguistics scholar and professor of Cushitic languages and literatures in the University of London, Bogumil Witalis ("Goosh") Andrzejewski, 1922-1994.

The collection is arranged as Professor Andrzejewski filed and identified the materials, and consists of the following series: I. Somali Notes; II. Oral Literature; and III. Miscellaneous. An inventory is available.

The Somali Notes are Andrzejewski's handwritten notes and annotations about the background of various published Somali texts and vocabulary developed during the Somali literacy campaign of the mid-1970s. The Oral Literature section relates to themes of oral narratives in non-Somali Cushitic languages, and also contains a group of oral poems transcribed in Osmania script.

Additional research materials from the collection of Professor Andrzejewski are housed in the Archives of Traditional Music, Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.
