The Astle mss., 1795-1797, are the letters and memoranda of Andrew Stuart, -1801, lawyer, to Thomas Astle, 1735-1801, antiquary and paleographer. Stuart served as tutor to the children of James, 6th duke of Hamilton, and acted as his lawyer in the claim of Archibald James Edward Douglas, 1st baron Douglas, against the family estate. A member of Parliament from 1774-1784 and 1790 to his death, he was also Commissioner on the Board of Trade. He succeeded to the estate of Sir John Stuart of Castlemilk, Lanarkshire in 1797 and a year later published The Genealogical history of the Stewarts. These papers, concerned with his work on the Stewart family genealogy, are described further in the Manuscripts Catalog.
