The Auchincloss mss., 1928-1935, have been removed from Lilly Library copies of books by Edwin Arlington Robinson, 1869-1935, poet, which formerly belonged to Charles C. Auchincloss, 1881-1961, broker.
They consist of sheets containing typewritten questions to Robinson about some of his poems and answers to the questions in Robinson's hand. The same questions (handwritten) with the answers in Robinson's hand signed with his initials appear on the inside of the front covers and on the front flyleaves of the books to which they refer.
In addition to the question and answer sheets in the Public Services Department there are two pasted in the fronts of the following books by Robinson: Dionysus in doubt ... New York, Macmillan, 1925 (Lilly PS3535 .O2 D5 1925) and Roman Bartholow ... New York, Macmillan, 1923 (Lilly PS3535 .O2 R69).
The following two books by Robinson also have the same questions and answers written on their front flyleaves which are not present in the collection on separate sheets: Dionysus in doubt ... New York, Macmillan, 1925 (Lilly PS3535 .O2 D51); Roman Bartholow ... New York, Macmillan, 1923 (Lilly PS3535 .O2 R71).
On the flyleaf of The man who died twice ... New York, Macmillan, 1924 (Lilly PS3535 .L2 M26) is written a question and answer not found in the separate sheets or pasted on books.
The collection also contains two letters written by Robinson, one to [James Ray] Wells, September 17, 1928, and the other to Charles C. Auchincloss, January 21, 1935.
