Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

BLAKE MSS.

The Blake mss., l8l9-l958, consist of letters and documents relating to the Holman family of Aurora, Indiana. The materials were collected by Professor Israel George Blake while doing research for The Holmans of Vereastau (Oxford, Ohio: Mississippi Valley Press, 1943). Dr. Blake turned over these items to the Hillforest Historical Foundation in Aurora in 1958. The Hillforest Foundation transferred the collection to Lilly Library, Indiana University in June 2000.

The earliest Holman item in the collection is a journal of William Steele Holman, 1822-1897, kept while a student at Franklin College in 1839. Also present is the W.S. Holman family Bible purchased in July 1843, in which are recorded family marriages, births, and deaths. The last marriage recorded is that of Paul Holman to Estelle Amelia Carlton, June 21, 1893; the last birth, Holman Fletcher, March 19, 1885; and the last death Alice Maud Holman, June 21, 1874, "aged 10 years, four months and three days." Photographs of historic documents relating to Jesse Lynch Holman, 1784-1842, of W.S. and Abigail Holman, and of Vereastau, as well as a few news clippings about various Holman family members complete the collection.

A copy of the original Hillforest inventory is in the Library and further information on the provenance of some items in the collection may be found in the Holman family mss. collection in the file of Pauline Holman Parks Wright.
