Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Brown, A., mss., 1973-1979, consist of the letters of philologist Eric Honeywood Partridge, 1894-1979, to Anthony Eugene Brown, 1937- , professor of English at Western Carolina University and Boswell scholar.

Dr. Brown met Mr. Partridge in 1972 while both were doing research in the British Museum. They became friends during that period and upon Brown's return to North Carolina, became frequent correspondents. The letters here mainly concern Partridge's social and research activities, various writing projects, and particularly in 1978-79, his book A Dictionary of Catch Phrases.

Five letters from Partridge's friend and frequent companion Eileen Wrigglesworth discuss Brown's last visit to Partridge in 1979 and recount some of the details about his death in May of that year.

Notes about the correspondence prepared by Anthony Brown and a photograph of Eric Partridge at age 83 complete the collection.

Anthony Brown's letters to Eric Partridge may be found in the Partridge mss.
