Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

BROWNING MSS.

The Browning mss., ca. 1846-1878, consist primarily of letters from poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning, 1806-1861, to her sister-in-law, Sarianna Browning. Also present are a few letters from Robert Browning, 1812-1889, poet, to his sister after Elizabeth's death, and two letters from the Brownings' son, Robert Wiedemann Barrett Browning, 1849- , called "Pen," to his Aunt Sarianna. An undated letter from Isa Blagden to Sarianna and an 1864 letter from Joseph Parkes to Robert Browning, Sr. complete the collection. The letters and envelopes are mounted in a leather bound volume titled "Elizabeth Barret [sic] Browning. Holograph Letters to Miss Browning"

The volume is accompanied by a typed transcription of Elizabeth Barrett Browning letters, prepared by Colin Franklin in August 1993, in which "the strict order of the album has been followed."
