Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Byron mss., 1816-1858, consist of letters, documents, drawings and prints of and related to Lord George Gordon Noel Byron, 1788-1824, poet. Correspondents are Sir John Cam Hobhouse, Baron Broughton; Anne Isabella (Milbanke) Byron, Lady Byron, George Gordon Noel Byron, 6th Baron Byron; Leigh Hunt; Augusta Ada (Byron) Lovelace; Thomas Moore; and John Murray. The two documents are an article by Leigh Hunt - "To the readers of the Examiner" - and an unidentified page of manuscript that might be in Lord Byron's hand.

The collection was originally formed by Edward Whittaker Hennell who had the materials mounted and bound by Zaehnsdorf in October 1891. The volume was disbound in 1988 and the letters and documents are now together at the front of the volume with the prints and drawings following. The latter are retained in the order in which Mr. Hennell had them. A 10 page handwritten "Index to autographs portraits &c of Lord Byron &c. 1 volume collected by E.W. Hennell" completes the collection.
