The Carter mss., 1956-1978, consist of letters to Linwood Vrooman Carter, 1930- , science fiction and fantasy writer and editor. The content centers around story lines and works in progress. About 200 letters from Lyon Sprague de Camp, filed separately from the other correspondents, concern his collaboration with Carter on the Conan stories based on a character created by writer Robert Ervin Howard, 1906-1936.

Correspondents include Poul Anderson, James Benjamin Blish, Robert Albert Bloch, Hannes Vajn Bok, Avram Davidson, Lyon Sprague de Camp, Lester del Rey, August William Derleth, Philip Jose Farmer, Edmond Moore Hamilton, Damon Francis Knight, John Keith Laumer, Fritz Leiber, Anne McCaffrey, Michael John Moorcock, Andre Norton, Andrew Jefferson Offutt, Frederik Pohl, John Holbrook Vance, and John Stewart Williamson.
