DAVIS, R. MSS.
The Davis, R. mss., 1974-1996, consist of letters to librarian and printmaker Richard Allen Davis, 1923- , of Indianapolis, Indiana. Born in Binghamton, New York, Davis received his BA in art from Albion College and an MFA from Iowa State. He worked in various art-related jobs until getting an MLS from the University of Michigan in 1960. From 1968 until retirement in 1984 he was head librarian at Butler University in Indianapolis.
For many years Davis made woodcut portraits of eminent people in the arts. Often he sent copies of these woodcuts to the subjects. The letters in the collection were written chiefly to thank Davis for sending the portraits. The files are arranged in alphabetical order and include: Jean Adhémar, Theodore Robert Bowie, Matthew Joseph Bruccoli, Malcolm Cowley, Aldelheid (Medicus) Gealt, Vartan Gregorian, Sir Geoffrey Langdon Keynes, Konrad Oberhuber, Jean Orizet, Charles Andrew Ryskamp, Thomas Treat Solley, and Virgil Thomson.
