The Erdmann mss., 1918-1919, 1942-1945, consist of letters from Marvin H. Erdmann, 1919- , teacher, primarily to his cousin Elaine (Lohrey) Herold. The letters were written during Erdmann's service with the 21st General Hospital, U.S. Army during World War II, while he was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia, and later in North Africa, Italy, and France. The letters discuss mutual friends, his living conditions, and descriptions of the various places he was stationed. Also included is a letter, Jan. 24, 1945, to Herold from Erdmann's older brother Byron C. Erdmann written while he was stationed in the Pacific with the Army Air Corp; and a letter from Marvin H. Erdmann to Herold's father, Frank Lohrey, dated Apr. 7, 1945. Completing the collection is a bound volume of The Stars and stripes, the official newspaper of the American Expeditionary Forces, dated February 8, 1918 to June 13, 1919. This volume belonged to Elaine Herold's father, Frank W. Lohrey, who was a veteran of World War I.
