EVANS, W.E. MSS.
The Evans, W.E. mss., 1892-1900, are letters, writings, and sketches of James Whitcomb Riley, 1849-1916, poet, collected by Walter E. Evans, an employee of The Bowen- Merrill Company of Indianapolis, Indiana. Two of the letters were sent to Evans, one to William H. Elvin, president of The Bowen-Merrill Co., and a fourth from W.J. Ebaugh of Carroll County, Maryland, to Riley was readdressed by him to Evans. Two small sketches in ink by Riley, dated 1898, are mounted on one sheet. The letter to Elvin also bears some sketches by Riley. Explanatory notes by Evans about the material accompany most of the pieces.
A single extraneous piece, dated 8-14-84, appears to be a price list for envelopes at Merrill, Meigs, and Co., predecessor of The Bowen-Merrill Co.
A folder of newspaper clippings completes the collection.
