Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Fenn mss. consist of materials from the library of Bert R. Fenn of Tell City, Indiana, related to the Howard Shipyards and Dock Company of Jeffersonville, Indiana.

These include copies of undated photographs of Captain James Howard, 1814-1876, the founder of the Howard yards, views of the Howard yards, and boats at the yards: America, Arthur Hider, City of Memphis, Fleetwood, Harry Brown, Henry Harley, John Howard, Jos. B. Williams, Kate Adams, Morning Star, Sunshine, and W.C. Hite. For the most part the boats are photographed in groups as tied up at the dock rather than as individual boats.

Accompanying the photographs is an original page from The Daily Graphic: New York, for November 20, 1877, presenting a view of the Howard yards, a reproduction of which was used in 1970 as endpapers for Fishbaugh's From Paddle Wheels to Propellers.
