Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Fontane, M. mss., 1879-1891, are those materials related to interoceanic canals formerly in the library of Marius Etienne Fontane, 1838-1914, at one time secretary- general of the Companie Universelle du Canal Interoceanique, an associate of Ferdinand de Lesseps, and author. The internal dates of some of the undated pieces would extend the time period to 1895.

The identification is made on the basis of handstyle, the common watermark of the papers among the materials, and the relationship to the quantity of books on the same subject acquired with the manuscripts from the same source.

Fontane's signature is inscribed on the front page of Histoire de Canal de Suez par Marius Fontane, Extraite de la Revue D'Economie Chretienne, Paris, Cournol, Librarie Editeur, 1864 (Lilly TC791 .F67 1864). A Xerox copy of the signature is filed with the collection.
