Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Forman mss., 1885-1887, are those cards and letters sent to Harry Buxton Forman, 1842-1917, editor, who at this time lived at 46 Marborough Hill, St. John's Wood, London. Written by Ford Madox Brown, 1821-1893, painter, and John Pollard Seddon, 1827-1906, art critic, they were concerned with settling the accounts for the placement of the bronze bust of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, 1821-1882, poet, which was sculptured by Brown, for a memorial fountain placed opposite Rossetti's home in Cheyne Walk. Two cards on the same subject are addressed to Frederic George Stephens, 1828-1907, art critic, by Seddon.

A final note is the receipt from the Metropolitan Drinking Fountain & Cattle Trough Association on Aug. 17, 1887, to Brown for seven pounds "to defray the cost of laying supply & fitting up the Rosetti [sic] Memorial Drinking Fountain." This was forwarded to Forman by Brown with a note in his hand on the envelope.

An empty envelope for the date Oct. 13, 1886, is filed with the collection.
