GELLERT MSS. II
The Gellert mss. II, mid-twentieth century, consist of unpublished drafts and fragments of a novel by folklorist and composer Lawrence Gellert, 1898-1979. A typed title page calls the novel Sundown: Memoirs of Greenwich Village, with the word "Memoirs" written in ink following a crossed out "Lure and Lore." A cover title, however, is Sundown: Folk Lore of Green Village. Other possible titles appear at various places in the manuscript, including "The Wax Works" and "Castaways." There are multiple drafts and fragments of the approximately 26 chapters, the names of which Gellert has written in ink as a "Table of Contents" following the title page. The manuscript was written over a period of years using different paper stock and even typewriter fonts. A few pages are carbon copies and some are photocopies of typescripts. Numerous handwritten changes and corrections are present through the manuscript.
304 pages in Mylar sleeves in two notebook volumes (Vol. 1: 158 pp., plus cover; Vol. 2: 138 pp., plus 16 half pages).
