GERSTEIN MSS.
The Gerstein mss., ca. 1795-1824, consists mostly of portraits of General Lafayette collected by Jacob and Sylvia Finn Gerstein. While the majority of the images of Lafayette are engravings, there is also a watercolor copied from an oil painting by Le Paon, a color lithograph, and a bronze bas-relief bust mounted on marble. Non-portrait items include: a watercolor of Lafayette's home, La Grange; two engravings of scenes from the French Revolution. Completing the collection are two manuscripts: a letter from James Monroe to congressman Charles Fenton Mercer, dated Dec. 24, 1824, and a signed testimonial from Lafayette concerning the loyalty of his secretary Poirey, dated Apr. 20, 1801
Gift. 1996.
