Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Gruelle mss., ca. 1940-1942, consist of original watercolor drawings, pencil sketches and pen-and-ink drawings for illustrations and cover designs for Raggedy Ann books published by McLoughlin Bros., Springfield, Massachusetts, ca. 1940. The illustrations are chiefly by Johnny Gruelle, 1880-1938, with a few for apparently unpublished titles by his brother, Justin Carlyle Gruelle (b. 1889), and by his son, Worth Gruelle (b. 1912). The titles involved are Marcella's Raggedy Ann Doll Book ; Raggedy Andy Goes Sailing; Raggedy Ann and the Hoppy Toad , by Johnny Gruelle; Raggedy Ann and the Laughing Brook , by Johnny Gruelle; Raggedy Ann Helps Grandpa Hoppergrass , by Johnny Gruelle; Raggedy Ann in the Garden , by Johnny Gruelle; Raggedy Ann's Coloring Book , by Worth Gruelle; and Raggedy Ann's Picture Book , by J.C. Gruelle. Also present are two typescript drafts (and a carbon copy of the earliest draft) of the text for Raggedy Andy Goes Sailing and a letter from William C. Erskine, as merchandising agent for the Johnny Gruelle Company, to McLoughlin Bros., April 22, 1941, discussing their publishing of "Raggedy Ann" books.

The files are arranged alphabetically by book title with the exception of Raggedy Ann's Picture Book which is in an oversize folio.
