Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

HAMMOND MSS.

The Hammond mss., 1812 and 1938-1952, consist of a letter of marque and reprisal granted by King George III to Thomas Hocquard, in command of "the ship called the AEOLUS...therewith by force of arms to seize and take the ships and vessels and goods belonging to the United States of America...." The document is accompanied by a handwritten and a typed carbon transcription and correspondence and notes of H.H. Hammond, F.R.A.S., relating to it, to privateering, and to the journal Thomas Hocquard was to have kept.

An apparently unrelated and undated document in which "Sir Peter Thompson is obliged to Mr. Nickloson for the lone [sic] of the Pennsylvania pamphlet," A.D., 1p., 24.3cm., and a clipping from The Blue Peter, September 1927, titled "The Liverpool Privateers," complete the collection.
