HAPGOOD - SACCO-VANZETTI MSS.

The Sacco-Vanzetti papers, 1920-1935, consist of one letter and eleven copies of letters written by Nicola Sacco, 1891-1927, shoemaker, and 58 letters and 72 copies of letters written by Bartolomeo Vanzetti, 1888-1927, fish peddler, while the two men were imprisoned in Massachusetts on the charge of murder; one letter to Sacco; 74 letters and 7 postcards to Vanzetti; 7 letters and one copy of a letter from persons interested in the case to other sympathizers; a copy of the funeral oration for the two men delivered by Mrs. Mary (Donovan) Hapgood; and some miscellaneous papers.

Of the 58 original Vanzetti letters, 55, April 10, 1924- Aug. 6, 1927, are to Mary Donovan and the remaining three, July 1, 1926, July 8, 1927, and no date, to unidentified persons. Of the letters to Miss Donovan those of Apr. 4, July 22, Sept. 25, 1925, May 24, Dec. 19, 28, 1926, Apr. 11, 14, 27, May 3, Aug. 6, 1927 are printed pp. 139-40, 163-65, 174-77, 200, 223-25, 226-27, 245-46, 246-47, 251-53, 254-55, 264-67, 316, in the edition of the Letters noted above.

Most of the printed letters omit portions of the letters or copies of letters in this collection or show variations in the text.

The one letter, Aug. 6, 1927, to Sacco is from Mary Donovan. Of the 74 letters and 7 postcards to Vanzetti 73 letters and 6 postcards are from Alice Stone Blackwell, 1857- 1950, journalist, and one letter from Mary Donovan, Aug. 6, 1927.

This collection is part of the Hapgood mss.
