HELTON MSS.

The Helton mss., 1850-1872, consist of account books of Andrew Helton, miller and merchant of Bloomington, Indiana, and his son Michael W. Helton, realtor of Bloomington, Indiana, and unbound bills and receipts, 1852-1855, for groceries and other merchandise bought by Helton and Dodds, merchants of Bloomington, Indiana. Among the account books is one for the First Presbyterian Church of 112 pages, January 1, 1850-September 23, 1852, with a letter of December 12, 1857, to A. Helton & Son, in pocket on back cover; others include a Ledger of 554 pages, December 20, 1852-February 20, 1855, Cash book of 110 pages, December 23, 1852-December 8, 1854, Daybook of 424 pages, August 7, 1854-December 24, 1861, all for Helton and Dodds; Daybook of 276 pages, October 23, 1854-August 1, 1857, for Humston and Chambers, merchants in dry goods and groceries; Daybook of 560 pages, January 1- September 26, 1855, Daybook of 196 pages, January 1-February 5, 1855, November 14, 1857-November 5, 1859, and an inventory of goods on hand June 5, 1861, Ledger of 497 pages, January 2, 1855-June 5, 1860, Daybook of 120 pages, April 4, 1855- November 7, 1857, Bloomington, Indiana, March 7-April 26, 1858, Fairfax, Indiana, Daybook No. 2 of 560 pages, September 27, 1855-June 26, 1856, all of the firm Andrew Helton & Son; Daybook of 69 pages, November 24, 1855-September 20, 1856, Daybook of 360 pages, November 10, 1857-September 13, 1858; Daybook of 576 pages, September 14, 1858-June 28, 1859, of Andrew Helton; Daybook of 714 pages, October 26, 1859- February 12, 1861, of Helton & Co., a partnership of Absalom J. Helton, Michael W. Helton, and Joshua Curtis; Ledger of 130 pages, January 16, 1864-April 25, 1867, with five miscellaneous manuscripts in pocket on back cover, of Andrew Helton; and a volume of 53 pages, January 23, 1869-February 28, 1872, of which the first five pages are accounts of Andrew Helton and the remaining pages contain descriptions of property for sale and records of sales, with twenty-one loose letters and papers dealing with real estate in pocket on back cover of Michael W. Helton. Many of the papers are mutilated.
