Lilly Library Manuscript Collections


The Henty mss., 1868-1952, are materials collected by Peter Martin, 1907- , of the editorial staff of the Saturday Evening Post , for a projected life of George Alfred Henty, 1832-1902, journalist and writer of stories for boys.

Included are two scrapbooks containing letters and copies of letters; biographical material on Henty; clippings from magazines and newspapers; photostats of printed material on Henty (e.g. clippings, biographical material); certified copies of marriage licenses, birth certificates; and death certificates of George Henty and his family, 1857-1941; photostats of the wills of Henty and his second wife, Elizabeth Keylock Henty; and photographs.

The collection also contains a folder of unbound letters; a folder of printed material relating to Henty; and three loose-leaf notebooks and a bound volume of bibliographical notes on Henty's writings.

Correspondents represented in the collection include George Baker, Blackie & Son, Limited, John Waynflete Carter, Aeneas Constantine, George Alfred Henty Griffith, Mrs. John Pettit Griffith, Audrey M. Henty, Richard Henty, Lizzie Hutchinson, Peter Martin, Kathleen E. (Henty) Packard, Ivor L. Poole, Ltd., F. A. Richards, Louis Harry Roddis, Sybil (Henty) Tremellen, Helen Ward, Betty Worledge, and Louis Booker Wright.

Completing the collection are ten original pen and ink drawings by Gordon Frederick Browne for Henty's In Freedom's Cause ; St. George for England; By Sheer Pluck; The Lion of St. Mark; With Wolf in Canada; Orange and Green; For Name and Fame; Bonnie Prince Charlie. Included is also a photograph of Gordon Frederick Browne.
