Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

HUGHES MSS.

The Hughes mss., 1833-1888, are legal papers of the law firm of Hughes, Denver and Peck, Washington, D.C. The partners were James Hughes, 1823-1873, lawyer, congressman from Indiana, and professor of law at Indiana University, 1853-1856; James William Denver, 1817-1892, lawyer, general, congressman from California, and governor of Kansas Territory; and Charles F. Peck, lawyer from Illinois.

The papers relate, in the main, to cases before the U.S. Court of Claims. Most of them deal with Confederate claims for the return of or reimbursement for cotton, real estate, and other property seized or destroyed during the Civil War. Among other cases are western land claims, Indian claims, Choctaw boundary question, 1853-1873; Texas bonds, 1864-1865; Leavenworth Pawnee & Western Railroad Co., 1861-1868; Memphis & Little Rock Railroad, 1866; Marine Railways & Ship Yards, 1865-1866; Lousiville & Portland Canal, 1870-1876; prize money, 1863-1870; Norfolk & Portsmouth Ferry Company, 1862-1872; barges, Alma and Hardscrabble, 1865-1871; schooners, Theresa C., Henry Nutt, Sidney Price, and Sea Lion, 1861-1865; ships, Salvor, Peytona, Cataline, Gray Eagle, Red Chief No. 1, Emma Dunn, Meteor, L. Dillard, Heroine, Wren, Grey jacket, Hyett, and Belfast, 1860-1873; documents for the 12th Cavalry regiment, 1862-1866; and 105th regiment of Illinois Volunteers, 1863-1865; and the 5th U.S. Volunteers, 1863-1866; and a number of cases dealing with pardons.

Since most of the correspondence consists of copies, only letters by the following prominent individuals were indexed: John Richard Barret, William Darius Bishop, James William Denver, Thomas Ewing, James Hughes, Robert Todd Lincoln, Peter Perkins Pitchlynn, David Dixon Porter, Wager Swayne, John Trimble, Walter C. Whitaker, Charles Wilkes, and Joseph Albert Wright.

In the collection are also twelve letter copybooks of the firm, 1866-1872, containing some six thousand copies of their letters.

The papers are arranged in chronological order. An attempt has been made, however, to keep the papers of each law case together in a folder, and to file these folders in the chronological arrangement under the date of the earliest paper in the folder.
