Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Kafader mss., 1855-1916, are papers of Engelbert Kafader, 1836- , who emigrated from Switzerland and settled in Terre Haute, Indiana, in or about 1887.

For the period of his European residence the collection contains military papers of Kafader as a member of the second Swiss regiment in the service of the King of Sicily, April 23, 1851-August 11, 1855; infantry commissions issued by officials of Schwyz canton, Switzerland, 1869-1872; and bills and receipts.

Included for the period following his immigration of Terre Haute are bills and receipts, deeds, mortgages, notes, and some letters, 1893-1916, most of the latter being from Switzerland.

Some of the mss. in the collection are in an oversize folder.
