The Keene mss., 1880-1890, are letters from Charles Samuel Keene, 1823-1891, humorous artist for Punch from 1851-1890, who also made drawings for other periodicals including the Illustrated London News and Once a Week and for various books.
The letters are for the most part undated, but those which carry dates fall within the years, 1880-1890. Thirty-one are addressed to Sir Francis Cowley Burnand, 1836-1917, playwright, author, and editor of Punch; one to George Price Boyce, 1826-1897, landscape painter; one to Charles William Shirley Brooks, 1816-1874, editor of Punch; one to Alfred Cooper, artist; and eleven to less famous individuals. The letters to Sir Francis Cowley Burnand and the one to Charles William Shirley Brooks relate to drawings; the others refer to books given and lent to Keene, to invitations, and to an exchange of bookplates.
