The Lawrence mss., 1911-1930, consist of letters and postcards from David Herbert Lawrence, 1885-1930, novelist, to Martin Secker, 1882-1978, publisher. Included are photographs of Lawrence, a drawing of The Boy in the Bush, and a drawing of the phoenix which Lawrence used as a device. The correspondence deals with the publication of his books and comments about other authors, publishers, and friends.
Most of the letters and cards were printed in Letters from D.H. Lawrence to Martin Secker, 1911-1930. Privately published, 1970 (Lilly PR6023 .A9 Z5 1970). Five letters-- January 14, 1921; August 8, November 23, November, December 6, 1926--printed in the book are not among the original letters in the collection. Some of the letters and postcards were incorrectly dated in the book. A list of variants is located in the collection folder. Covers accompany most of the letters. With the material is a bound volume of typescripts.
Notes are found on the verso of envelopes dated April 5 and August 10, 1920; January 21, 1922; April 4, 1926; April 29, 1927. The envelope for February 15, 1922, bears the red wax seal of DHL.
