MACLEISH MSS.
The MacLeish mss., 1937-1940, are letters to Archibald MacLeish, 1892-1982, poet, from Charles A. Pearce, 1906-1970, publisher, concerning his editorial responsibilities and contract arrangements with the Columbia Broadcasting System for the recording of his book Air Raid.
Materials by MacLeish include A Letter to Mr. Hemingway, poem of 27 lines, which was a response to Edmund Wilson's attack on him in The New Yorker on January 14, 1939 (a clipping of this article is enclosed), and a speech The American Cause, 16 pages with holograph corrections, delivered in Boston on November 20, 1940. Accompanying the speech is a letter from an editor proposing changes for the publication of the speech in book form.
Several printed pieces by MacLeish complete the collection.
