Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Mitchell, R. mss., 1980-1995, consist mainly of correspondence between several contemporary American poets and Professor of English, Roger Sherman Mitchell, 1935- , who served as director of the Creative Writing program at Indiana University during these years. Most of the letters are from poets interested in doing poetry readings on the IU-Bloomington campus, whether they are requesting the opportunity or are responding to an invitation by Mitchell. Often the letters will include biographical information and news of current writing projects or recent publications. Among the correspondents are Antler, Phillip Dean Appleman, Marianne Boruch, T. Coraghessan Boyle, Maxine Chernoff, Martha Collins, Nicholas Delbanco, Clayton Eshleman, Donald Hall, Robert Hass, David Michael Kaplan, Laurence James Lieberman, V.S. Naipaul, Jonathan Penner, Vern Rutsala, William Andrew Tremblay, and Ellen Bryant Voigt. A few of the letters are addressed to IU Professor Scott Russell Sanders and some copies of Mitchell's letters are also present. Five copies or drafts of fliers used to advertise campus poetry readings complete the collection.

The correspondence is arranged chronologically, followed by the folder of publicity fliers. An index to the correspondence is available.
