The Payne mss., 1907-1971, are the papers of Fernandus Payne, 1881-1977, zoologist. They consist of correspondence with prominent scientists and educators; speeches on science, higher education, teaching as a profession, and research; and memorabilia. At Indiana University he was chairman of the department of zoology, 1925-1948; dean of the college of arts and science, 1943-1946; and dean of the graduate school, 1927-1947. The papers have been divided into three categories. [1] Correspondence covers the period from 1907- 1971; [2] Speeches, 1928-1971; and [3] Printed matter and Miscellaneous. Among the papers are photographs, citations for honorary degrees, a list of Indiana University alumni in the department of zoology; bibliography of Fernandus Payne publications; and a plaque awarded by the class of 1966 at Indiana University.
