Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Peter Owen, Ltd. mss., 1968-1984, consist of correspondence files of the publishing firm Peter Owen, Ltd., London, England, with author, translator Margaret Crosland, 1920- , novelist Rhys Davies, 1903-1978, and writer David Le Vay, 1915- . The Crosland materials relate to her translations of Jean Cocteau, Colette, and Raymond Radiguet that were published by Peter Owen, as well as her biography of Colette, ...The Difficulty of loving... (1973). The David Le Vay materials also relate to translations of Colette, one of which he did with Crosland and two others for which Crosland wrote introductions or was otherwise involved. Copies of the introductions, contents pages, and indexes for most of the volumes are present in files arranged by publication date of title. Also present is a partial typescript of the Radiguet manuscript.

The Rhys Davies material relates to Julia and the Bazooka by Anna Kavan, published in 1969 with an introduction by Davies who was Kavan's executor. Two later letters from Davies to Owen concern Kavan's I am Lazarus, reissued by Peter Owen, Ltd. in 1977.

Other correspondents present in the collection include several editors at Peter Owen, Ltd., Colette's daughter Colette-Renee de Jouvenel, and editors at Bobbs-Merrill publishers in Indianapolis.
