ROGERS, G.B. MSS.
The Rogers, G.B. mss., ca. 1884-1921, consist primarily of letters between Elizabeth (Slater) Rogers, 1865-1918, and her future husband, George Benjamin Rogers, 1868-1936. Their letters begin while both are in college, she at Wellesley College, class of 1888, and he at Williams College, also class of 1888, and continue through their courtship, engagement, and marriage in June 1896. Many of the letters were written during their individual travels in Europe: Elizabeth was in Greece from 1888-1889 and Paris in 1894; George traveled Europe in 1892-1893, particularly Germany and Italy. In addition to the travel letters, Elizabeth discusses her daily life, conversations she has had, her opinions on issues of the day, and her ambitions.
Elizabeth received her A.B. in 1888 and A.M. in 1894 from Wellesley and taught Greek at Holyoke College from 1892-1896. George received his A.B. in 1888 from Williams College and his A.M. in philosophy at Harvard in 1894. He taught briefly at Riverview Academy in Poughkeepsie, New York while attending Harvard, then became a faculty member of Phillips Exeter Academy where he taught for 42 years, 1895-1936. Elizabeth and George stayed in Exeter, New Hampshire where they raised two daughters, Constance and Katharine.
The collection also contains a number of letters from Elizabeth to her family and friends, letters from friends to Elizabeth and George, and a letter from George to his daughters. A file of George's term records from Williams College for 1884 through 1886, a bill from the college for the term ending July 1886, and a letter to parents addressing the issue of hazing, complete the collection.
