The Rolland mss., 1906-1918, consist of letters and post cards sent by French novelist and playwright Romain Rolland, 1866-1944, to Elsa Wolff, 1878-1942, an aspiring German writer.
Topics discussed in the correspondence include French, German, and American literature and writers; German music and composers; French political affairs, including the Dreyfus Affair; and Rolland's own work and successes as a writer. There is a five year break in the correspondence, between June 1913 and August 1918, caused apparently by the war. All the correspondence is in French; letters are accompanied by envelopes.
This correspondence has been published in its entirety in Cahiers Romain Rolland, 14: Fraulein Elsa; lettres de Romain Rolland a Elsa Wolff. Presentees et annotees par Rene Cheval. Paris, Albin Michel, 1964 (PQ2635 .O37 A19 v.14). In this volume letters numbered 41, 100, 118, and 119 have been printed with incorrect dates: no. 41 should be 6 Aug. (not 14 Aug.), no. 100 should be 12 Oct. (not 2 Oct.); numbers 118 and 119 should be 1918 (not 1916).
