Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Sargent mss., 1917, are letters written to George Henry Sargent, 1867-1931, bibliographer, author, and editor. The letters concern the book Americana Ebrietatis, written by Hewson Lindsley Peeke and printed by Lewis McGregor Thompson in 1917. Other materials include a printed review of the book from The Sandusky Register; a longer printed account from the Boston Evening Transcript by Sargent in which he quotes the fake 1682 letter of Cotton Mather regarding the Quakers and used by Peeke in his book; and a copy of a letter from Charles Knowles Bolton of The Boston Athenaeum protesting the use of the Mather letter.

The correspondents are Charles Knowles Bolton, Charles Frederick Heartman, Hewson Lindsley Peeke, and Lewis McGregor Thompson.
