Lilly Library Manuscript Collections


The Shapiro mss., 1940-1962, consist of correspondence between Karl Jay Shapiro, 1913- , poet, and Theodore Roethke, 1908-1963, professor, poet, and of writings of Shapiro. At this time Shapiro was editor of the Prairie Schooner at the University of Nebraska and Roethke was teaching at the University of Washington.

The writings are comprised of drafts of poems, some with revisions in the poet's hand, worksheets, alternate versions, and a notebook of worksheets labeled "No Goodniks."
