The Simon mss., 1978 and 1990-1995, consist primarily of cards and letters from author Patrick O'Brian, 1914- , to his friend and literary agent, Richard Scott Simon. The earliest item, a postcard dated 17 September 1978, is written to Vivien Green at Richard Scott Simon Ltd. Ms. Green became Mrs. Simon and is mentioned frequently throughout the later letters and cards. Mostly the letters are social in nature, discussing food, travel, and especially gardening. There are occasional mentions of manuscripts being worked on or finished, and a particularly interesting note about the fact that O'Brian did not save any of the manuscripts of his works before the "naval tales (we papered a wooden ceiling with one, I remember)".…
Other correspondence present includes a carbon copy of Simon's letter to O'Brian of 7 June 1993 and two letters to Simon from Michael Ballentyne, August and September 1995, regarding an article about O'Brian that Ballentyne was preparing for the Canadian edition of Reader's Digest.
