Lilly Library Manuscript Collections

The Stokes mss., 1905-1906, consist primarily of letters from Upton Beall Sinclair, 1878-1968, novelist, to publicist James Graham Phelps Stokes, 1872-1960, regarding the activities of the Intercollegiate Socialist Society. Subjects discussed include the arrangements for a large meeting at which Jack London was to speak and the hiring of an individual to see to the Society's business on a full-time basis.

The collection includes a letter to Stokes from E.F. Robbins, Sinclair's secretary, and a carbon copy of a letter from Sinclair to a T. Bayard Collins, as well as four promotional leaflets produced by Sinclair's Jungle Publishing Company for the books The Jungle, Manassas, and Prince Hagen.
